Guided Research in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (2010/2011)

What is Guided Research?

Guided research is part of the undergraduate programs in EECS, CS and ECE. The guided research courses are jointly offered by all the respective professors: CS by the Computer Science faculty, ECE by the Electrical Engineering faculty, EECS conjointly. The professors propose a number of research projects, which can be handled within 6 weeks full time (or equivalent distributed time). The list of projects will be posted on the website. Students interested in particular projects should get in touch with the professor in charge of that project. As part of the project the students should prepare a research proposal (5 pages; howto), a final report (20 pages) and present the project in a seminar during the last 2 weeks of the semester.

Warning: There is no graduation without guided research!

Registration

Students taking guided research have to register via campus.net for the guided research proposal course (Fall 2010)

  • Guided Research Proposal Electrical Engineering (300361)
  • Guided Research Proposal Computer Science (320371)

Students must choose a topic and have it approved by the respective supervisor until 15.Dec.2010. Furthermore, students must also register for the guided research course (Spring 2011) on campus.net.

  • Guided Research Electrical Engineering (300342)
  • Guided Research Computer Science (320342)

There will be groups corresponding to the respective supervisors, which must be chosen.

Schedule

2010-10-01 CS Deadline for selecting the topic and the supervisor (faculty member)
2010-12-15 EE Deadline for selecting the topic and the supervisor (faculty member)
2011-01-15 Research proposal due (5 pages; howto)
2011-05-08 Final report due (by midnight, 20 pages)
2011-05-12/13 CS: Oral Presentations (15 minutes + 5 minutes discussion)
2011-05-12/13 EE: Oral Presentations (15 minutes + 5 minutes discussion)

Grading

- The grade for the proposal (grading scheme) will also be the grade for the guided research proposal course (Fall 2010)

- The final grade for the guided research course (Spring 2011) will be composed of two partial percentage grades:

Submissions

The research proposal and the final report should be submitted to the supervisor. The student is responsible to make sure that the submission reaches the supervisor in time for the deadline. The research proposal and final report can be submitted electronically by e-mail. For electronic submission, the date of the e-mail counts as the basis for determining timeliness.

Late submissions of the research proposal and the final report will be penalized by a grade reduction of 10 percentage points per day for the contribution. So, for instance in the guided research course, if you submit your thesis two days late, that would have netted you 60%, then the thesis will contribute a partial grade of 40%. Thus, even if your presentation is perfect (100%) your final grade will be at 80%*40%+100%*20%=52%, you will be very close to failing your guided research!

CS Presentations

Presentations of guided research projects will be on Thursday/Friday, May 12/13, 2011, in Easthall 5 / Easthall 1. Slots are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. To apply for a slot, contact Jürgen Schönwälder and send him your preferred list of time slots, the name of your supervisor, and the title of your talk. Topics

Students taking guided research in 2011 have to choose their guided research topic by the end of 2010 to get started early. It is generally recommended to get engaged in research as early as possible since that gives an additional perspective on your major. The table below lists some topics. It is also possible to propose a topic. But in this case, you have to approach a faculty member and convince him.

In case you like to know more about a topic listed below, please go and see the respective faculty member.

Go to this person's topic list: Baumann, Bergholz, Birk, Bode, Henkel, Jaeger, Knipp, Kohlhase, Linsen, Schönwälder, Stamerjohanns, Wallace, Gao, Mahleko
